Blog 10: Mise-se-scene

Location/Setting:
The main set location will be in the recording studio where the main character starts the song. A location in a busy street and possibly the surroundings of the town which will be use for other shots in the music video.

Example images:

Colour:
The shade of the colour is bright colour that will mainly go with black because the original singer for this song is a teenager that is under a subculture of emo/punk rock style. According to this the colour for the setting would be a bright colour with black most of the time.

Costume/make-up:

Base on the subculture that the original band is in, Emo/punk, it makes the choice for the costumes and make-up easier for the music video. It will most likely follow on that line but not completely because the music is not aggressive and dark so I think only some bit of emo here and there should be better such as hair style, shoes, and pants.

Blog 8 : initial ideas

The song contain a story line of a person's life. A bad expirence in the past affect her when she grown up. The idea of Love and trust people around her are not in the picture of her life at all. for this reason some ideas have spring to my mind that the Video should at some point contain a charactor looking back at her past and the story line carry from there where her thought about the past come back to a present day. With these ideas in mind our group start to talk about it and brainstorm our ideas into it and see what fits. Finally we came up the the solution for our VDO. Along with the decision for places and location, costumes, and a techinial idea for VDO technics. These ideas will be presnet under a pitch which you can access and find out more in details on the links.

Blog 9: VDO Pitch

We have listent to the music and studied its meaning which give us an idea of how the narrative of the lyric we can create in our music VDO. A research on a target audience, genra, all these allow us to come to some conclusions for an overall ideas of costumes and the style of the character we have to create to fit in with the target audience that we have set on. You can follow the links below the presentation of our ideas on the music VDO.

Blog 7: Filming technique, camera use.

After some understanding about how to record, camera use, and what do we need to think about when we making a video for example: mise-sene like props and lighting; cenimatography such as camera angles and position of the camera that we have to use to create as closer to the exiting video; A note that will be written down comment about each scene that have been filming. Other than that we also have to consider about the equipment that are needed for filming: Shooting script, so that everyone in the team will follow what type of angle we have to do and where does the scene take place; and a clapperboard that are very important for everyone in filming team including the actors themselves to know which shot and take we're all at and it's also easier when it's time to editing the video. The video that we have to work on is 'Teenage dirt bag', where we have to recreate it. Each scene we will switch position on camera so that everyone will have a hand in using camera. This is a very good experience of how to work in group and how to give everyone responsibility in the position of filming they are in: director, camera man, clapboard holder, and actors.

Things that should have for camera shooting
1. Shooting script
2. Clapperboard
Things to consider before filming
1. Make sure everyone on the team have a shooting script, especially people who incharge of the camera and clapperboard person.
2. Have all the setting for the scene ready.
3. A right description on a clapperboard, eg. Shot 1 Take 1.
4. Have all the actors in position ready to shoot.
Things to consider for camera
1. Carefuly position the camera and make sure it’s tight and safet.
2. Make sure to adjust a white balance.
3. Before shooting rolling a tape for awhile before shooting
4. Make sure that the scene that you going to shoot are in the right frame in the camera screen.
What does Shooting script and Clapperboard do?
We can say that it is a guiding book for the shooting. It help reminding us what shot type, Description of action, Camera movement/direction for that particular scene should be. This will help to decrease the posibilities of the mistake that can happen during the scene and also a big help during the time of editing especially a clapperboard because it tells the editor which shot and take it come from.

blog 6: Video Analysis

Paramore video's link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J7J_IWUhls

Genre: Paramore is an Alternative rock Band.
Representation: The song 'The only exception' mainly representing a life of a teenager whose family are separated and can't seem to find a real love. But there is a person that she only makes an exception for is her boyfriend.

Narrative: The song a telling a story of a life of a young teenager girl who disappointing in a love from her family which leaves her with a negative feelings about 'Love'. She would trust or love anyone. From this video would be her boyfriend because she feels that she might be disappoint again. Almost entire video showing how she run away from her boyfriend and get herself involve with many people and places. The more she is with people the more she sees that she always thinking about the past that she has with her boyfriend and now that she's with other people she can see that no one can be like her boyfriend. At the end of the video she realize that only him that she will give and exception to trust, to love, and to be with him.

Audience: Mainly are a group of young people around the age of 15-25.

The video communicated well with young people because the story line from this song connected with a life of most young people nowadays that are in the same kind of situation where either separating family that make them feel unsecure to trust other people or a love that they find to be perfect that they can accept them without cause.

VersaEmerge’s link for American boy : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO2FwnG55l8

Genre: An Alternative rock, experimental rock and Post-hardcore.
Representation: 'American boy' representing a desire of a teenager that expressing her feeling that she has for a perticular guy that she met. If to compare this representation to Paramore it is quite the same, where they focus on teenager's life, feelings, and emotion that they have toward the person they love or their love dream that they wish to have.
Narrative: 'American boy' doesn't have a story video that goes with the lyric. It is only show a singer(Sierra Kusterbeck) and the guitar player(Blake Harnage) recording the song in a studio so there is not much of a narrative create. On the other hand, it show a couple of teenager singing and playing the which show the expression that the singer felt when she sang a song about someone that she interested in of the singer and the guitar player while they recored. How much she wanted to be with him and go to a places that she never been before in America because he's an American boy.

Blog 5 : Target audience of Artist/Band

Target audience for the band
Paramore has been up on the cover for many music magazine such as: Kerrang!, Billboard mag., Rock sound, NME, AP (Alternative press mag.) etc. From the overview of the magazines' target audience itself mainly forcus on teenagers, mostly men around the age of 15+ and people in ABC1 catagories (working people).

Eg.
Kerrang! ABC1 = 218
15-44 = 389
Men = 258
Women = 164

The result that I get from the research on Facebook of Paramore and most of the comments that were posted are largely Teenagers and also adults around 25-30 which would be in a Socio-economic in AB and C1. Via facebook are the Merch session where products are mainly sells for young people eg. T. shirt, notebook, Necklace, and Vinyl Package.

From an online interview on Paramore where they ask on the target audience that Paramore wanted to forcus on, Heyley, Lead vocal of the Paramore, answered that "Our music is for everyone. There are probably things on our new record that older people would get and understand before a younger person – and I pride myself in that. I’m not picking big words out of a dictionary, I’m just writing about what I know and what’s real. Anyone can relate to that."

Blog 4 : Permission

Copyright is a way to prevent people using the songs that belong the artists for their own profits without asking for permission from the company that own the copyright for the music. Without the permission they can be charge as an illegal action. The copyright also very important for the company and the artist because it is one of the ways they receive their income.

Blog 3: song choice

These are the lists of songs choice that we considered

1. The only exception by Paramore

2. The drugs don't work by The Verne

3. Complicated by Avril

4. A thousand miles by Venessa Carlton

The points that will allow us to make a decition for our song choice is an easy lyric that not too complicate to understand but at the same time widely open lyric enough for the creativities of a story line and editings. The song choice that we make is "The only exception by Paramore". The lyric are easy to follow and understand.

Lyric: The Only Exception

When I was younger, I saw my daddy cry.

And curse at the wind. he broke his own heart,

and I watched as he try to reassemble it.

And my momma swore that,

She would never let herself forget.

and that was the day that I promised, I'd never sing of love if it does not exist.

** but darling, you are the only exception.

You are the only exception. You are the only exception. You are the only exception.

Maybe I know, somewhere deep in my soul.

That love never last, and we've got to find other ways.

To make it alone or keep a straight face.

And I've always live like this.

Keeping a comfortable distance

And up until now I had sworn to myself,

That I content with loneliness because none of it ever worth the risk.

***I've got a tight grib on reality.

But I can't let go of what's in front of me here.

I know you leaving in the moorning when you wake up.

Leave me with some kind of proof, it's not a dream, oh

And I'm on my way to believing. Oh, and I'm on my way to believing.

3. Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0BaDRignlI

Genre: Electronic, hip-hop and some rock feels.

Representation, Narative: I think it's talk about a person's life that used to have no hope and used to be someone where everyone thinks that he's no good, treading unfarely etc. but now that he has a hope 'in a bag' with him he can finally see a glimes of light that his innner self can be free. Doesn't matter what other will think of him anymore?
The VDO itself is different from other two VDOs that I have post because it was a 2D, a cartoon character of a band playing music and singing and at the same time takes up action that goes together with the lyric telling a story as a representing. The main character is a Gorillaz which I think is the inner self of everyone in the band that desire to get out and do whatever it wants to do, it want to be wild just like a wild and agressive Gorillaz. But when the line saying about 'i'm feeling glad, i got sunshine in a bag....The future is coming on" the vdo showing a dark back ground and tombs coming out of the ground so i don't think that the 'Sun shine' that he has is a good hope, rescue, or future...?

Audience:
Around age 19-25 Mainly men as a target audience.

4. The Scientist by Coldplay www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmjPrdTNxQ0

Genre : Alternative rock, Britpop

Representation and Narative: The whole meaning of the song is that love is a complicated thing. People have to find reasons but it can never be enough to explan the feelings not even a scientist can figure out, but only the feeling inside your heart can tells you. Vdo is a story line but starts from the end and reverses to the beginning of the story. Throughout the MV all the actions are in a reverse story, to go 'back to the starts' where everythings started where 'love' started. This is to coresponding the meaning to LOVE in the MV where at the end we know what cause him to wanted to go back to the start, why the feelings that he has a so hurt and confusing.

Audience: 16 - 35 for both gender

Blog 2: Exploring Music Video

These are the 4 music VDOs that I've chosen to explore and understanding the genre, representaton, narrative, audience and how the vdo communicates a meaning.

1. Cry by Godly and Cream : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxtPRF6NG7I

The song deals with the issues within each person and saying about how sad it feels when someone did something bad to them. With the way the lyric composed, it doesn't speak about one perticular problem but an overall action of people to one another that make people of every ages, gender, nationality 'Cry'.

Genre: Pop rock music style by the use of an electric guitar and a steady rhythm with a loud drum and bass. A screaming vocal on the words 'cry' also identify the genre as a rock music.

Representation: Using a close up shot throughout to let the audience see the expression of the people in the MV. Using dissolve from one person's face to another to present every gender, ages, and nationalities.

Narrative: Facial expression of every people goes with the lyric and expressed its meanning eg. one man crying at the beginning of the vdo, some expression their facial expression in saddness and dissapointment.

Audience : Around the age of 19 - 35 of both gender.

2. Hurt by Johnny Cash : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho

Genre: Classic-Acustic style. Only use an acustic guitar along with piano through out the MV.

Representation:
Cross cutting and an insert of either Johnny Cash in the past or a Vdo that contrast with the lyric. Close up shot and extreme close up also often use to see his facial expression and to emphisis the particular phrase of the lyric that has been compare eg. Extreme close up of a dead fish on the table with the words 'Broken thoughs I can not repair.'

Narrative: The used of the MV work two ways for the lyric : as a story line when pictures and an old VDO of Johnny Cash in the past insert between the original MV(a present time); and as a comparison and contrast with the lyrics eg. I will let you down, I will make you hurt contrested with the MV that shows a picture of Jesus carrying the cross and get hammered by a nail as to say that he will make others hurt and dissapointed but opposite to Jesus as he took everything upon Himself instead of us, I think? A visual comparison with a phrase when he sang "You could have it all, my empire of dirt" and the MV shows all of his trophies and awards that he had from the past. The MV where he sit on the table full of good foods, nice chair, expensive looking glasses makes us audience see that even if it seems nice and wealthy but actualy he feel like ''I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair' which are contrast to what people see.

Audience: target audience might be around the age of 19 - 65/ both gender.
